3/10/2020 – Here are some of the highlights from Tuesday night’s Life bible study from Exodus 7:3-13. Tuesday night we started out reviewing what was discussed 5 weeks ago concerning the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart. This idea creates a problem for most people. They believe that God might be doing something evil. But He is not nor could He ever. He simply let Pharaoh have his own way. This is seems in Romans 1:24; 26.
Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves; For this reason God gave them up to vile passions.
The patience of God is on display here. Even as Pharaoh has his own way and his heart hardens, God still shows Himself and His power to Pharaoh and gives him reason to believe. The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them – Exodus 7:5.
Pharaoh will not heed the warning of God and God would bring down righteous judgment on Egypt and strangely when the power of God is revealed they would still reject God. This is terrifying.
The rod of God and the serpent are mentioned again by the Lord. In Moses and Aaron’s view the first encounter seems to have failed miserably yet they display amazing courage to without question move forward. They just obey.
The first time the serpent is mentioned in chapter 4:3 it means serpent; a snake. But now there is a different word used. This word translated serpent literally means dragon, sea monster that is believed to be a crocodile. There were lots of snakes in Egypt as well as crocodiles in the Nile so it seems reasonable to believe that this rod turned into something way different than a snake.
Most believe it was now a crocodile and this crocodile completely swallowed up all the serpents from Pharaoh’s sorcerers. Why does this matter? Snake or crocodile. It matters because it is a display of God Almighty, all-consuming power. Man tried to duplicate God’s power only to fail miserably. Satan is a powerful being but with limits. He is unable to perform true miracles. The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders – 2 Thess. 2:9. Satan deceives with wonders that look to be the miraculous but are counterfeit’ powerful but still not miracles. Man is also powerful but with limits. Everything that man can do, think, make or perform is swallowed up by Almighty God.
The best, brightest, strongest, fastest and smartest all pale in comparison to God. This realization can be crushing. We can either be humbled by this in the sight of God the Victor or allow anger and pride, hardness and bitterness drive us. God’s power is ALWAYS greater.
Closing thought: Everything placed before God will always be defeated. Amen.
Verse of the Week
Then Moses and Aaron did so; just as the Lord commanded them, so they did – Exodus 7:6
