100 Day Faith Challenge
This is an except from our bible study, Wed, night at the Well…
Let’s talk about faith…your faith. We have talked about faith a lot. We have asked many times, what does faith look like?…particularly in the 21st century. And if my memory serves me we never really get anywhere when we ask, “what does faith look like in the 21st century”. What does faith look like in my life and in your life? These are hard questions but honestly not THAT hard. Do we have a good understanding of what faith is? If so then we SHOULD be able to sense what faith looks like today.
IF we were given a huge Pictionary drawing pad and asked to draw a picture to illustrate what faith is, I wounder how many of us could complete the drawing or describe faith. In my mind faith would be like a picture of a child standing on the edge of a pool and mom or dad is in the water saying, “Jump!”
Let’s look backwards, define faith and see what it really looks like and determine the kind of faith that we have and what we can do to go deeper in faith and get stronger in faith.
Look at the proud! They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked. But the righteous will live by their faith – Habakkuk 2:4 – Faith here is literally trusting. The root word means to be carried, make firm, certain.
In the New Testament we get another look at faith as Jesus speaks of it. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? – Matt. 6:30 Here faith means a “conviction of truth, belief” It reflects the character of one that can for relied on.
2 verses 100’s of years apart, different languages and yet virtually saying the same thing about faith.
Faith says “Jump. I will catch you.” Faith says “Come – Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”. Faith says “I can’t. But God can”. Imagine that child jumping from the side of a pool into his dad or moms arms. Or that same child, with a loose tooth and dad says “Do you want me to pull it?”
Heb. 11 teaches that Faith is confidence that what we hope for will actually happen. Assurance of things that we can’t see. What DID faith look like?
By Faith – We believe – At God’s command we understand that the entire universe was created; that what we see now did not come from anything that can be seen. The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created.
He breathed the word, and all the stars were born – Ps. 33:6
For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command – Ps. 33:9
It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering showed that he was righteous and that God approved of his righteousness as he offered to God properly something that he precious to him – life.
It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying. Only a man of faith can enjoy such close communion with God that it is said of him that “He was a person who pleased God”. I hope that is said of you or me.
It was by faith that Noah obeyed
It was by faith that Abraham obeyed
It was by faith that Sarah believed
There is so much more to this amazing chapter of Hebrews but for the sake of time and space, faith consists of believing and obeying and hoping. Now…here is the challenge. How is your faith doing? How hot is your faith of the faith thermometer? Let fan the flame a little and take that ember and turn it into a blaze. I have made available to everyone a 100 day reading plan that covers most of the major themes in the scriptures. Download it on this page (Look for the button that looks like a book) and take the challenge to read God’s Word and grow your faith BUT…it doesn’t stop with you. Monday thru Thursday (or whenever you decide to start) read through the days plan. On Friday, read it with your wife, husband, dad, mom or children. Then of Saturday, do the same, but pick a different person. If you picked mom Friday, pick dad of Saturday – get it? Do this for 100 days and talk about what you read and your faith with your family and watch out – something will be growing! On Sunday, go to your church body and tell them all about what God is do but don’t forget Sunday reading. Let us know how your faith increase and what great things the Lord has done in your life as you dive into God precious Word. SELAH!
